Faster than you fear if the routine is airtight, slower than you hope if it is not. Puppies need frequent trips out, supervision in between and a crate they are comfortable in. Your trainer sets that routine up in your home on the first visit, tailored to your schedule, your yard and your Carlsbad condo or Fallbrook acreage, then checks in as the accidents drop off.
No. Adult rescues from the Escondido or Oceanside shelters often arrive without any house habits, and some dogs regress after a move or a new baby. The approach is the same as with a puppy: supervision, a tight schedule, the crate and a clear outdoor spot. Adult dogs usually catch on quickly once the rules are consistent.
Yes, and that is the whole point. Accidents happen on your rug, so your trainer works in your kitchen, your yard and your doorway, not a facility. They look at where your dog sleeps, where the water bowl sits, how the crate is used and when the last trip outside happens, then fixes the pieces that are causing the problem.
Usually because the trip outside was play time, not potty time, so your dog came back in still full. Sometimes it is marking, sometimes it is too much freedom too soon. Your trainer watches the routine in your home, finds which one it is and adjusts it. For dogs in Rancho Bernardo or Vista with big yards, we also teach a specific potty spot.
