Advanced work builds on a real foundation, so your trainer tests the basics at the free consultation: does your dog hold a stay while the door opens, or come the first time with a dog across the street? If the foundation is there, you start at this level. If not, your trainer fills the gaps first, because an off-leash recall is only as good as the on-leash one underneath it.
Your trainer starts with a long line in quiet places, then raises the distraction one step at a time on trails and properties where off-leash is allowed. A Lab that used to pull toward every stranger now walks on or off leash without leaving his owner's side after six lessons. A Golden Retriever that would not listen on leash is now completely off leash on walks and knows about a dozen commands.
Owners are surprised by how much their dog likes having tasks. Distance downs, an out-of-sight place and a heel through Carlsbad Village on a Saturday give a smart dog a job, and clients tell us their dogs light up when the trainer arrives. Every program starts with a free in-home consultation. A trainer meets your dog in your living room, works with it on the spot and brings their own trained dog, Keiko or Lokai, so you can see the finished result before you commit to anything. Lessons run weekly, about an hour each, with homework between visits and a trainer you can text with questions. Most programs finish in six or seven lessons. The core program everything else is built on. Private in-home lessons that graduate into real-world sessions on North County sidewalks, beaches and patios, from kindergarten through university. Owners finish with a dog that goes to its place when guests arrive, walks on a loose leash and, for some, stays by their side off leash.
